Welcoming New Friends
LISTEN, I READ
BOOK: YUCK, A LOVE STORY
AUTHOR: MARIE-LOUISE GAY
With a class set of books and some or our support staff (resource teachers, EAL teachers, teacher librarians) we would read the book as a guided reading activity, where there would be some time to read, discuss, question, ponder, and reflect on the themes in this book.
This class has had many new students arrive in their classroom from different parts of the world. The themes of friendship, acceptance and making new students feel comfortable and confident in their new settings are important ones in our school as well. After reading this book and discussing the book with the author, we would make a booklet and video about how to welcome new students and make them feel special and accepted. Our school plan this year focuses on Literacy, Numeracy and Global Citizenship so we will be addressing 2 of those goals with this project. * We would only keep enough books (6-8) for guided reading in our literacy lab. We would then donate the rest of these books to an inner city school library and some Aboriginal school libraries. This would help support Aboriginal Education as highlighted in Free the Children – local spotlight initiative.
Update
(June 21, 2012)
We have read the book Yuck, a Love Story by Don Gillmor and illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay. We have discussed this book and created questions for the author and illustrator. We were able to send our questions by email to Marie-Louise Gay and we Skyped with Don Gillmor on June 14th, 2012. The students and staff were very excited, engaged and interested to speak with Don Gillmor about his book, his ideas and even his personal life that related to his writing. We are in the process of finishing our book about welcoming new students to our school and filming it. We will be posting this video soon.
Thank you,
