Healthy Girls

We would like to host two afternoon workshops to promote healthy living for the girls of our school and our partner elementary school in the town of Schreiber. Our workshops would focus on the health curriculum expectations. Specifically we hope to have the girls learn about healthy eating choices, personal safety regarding social interaction and conflict management and growth and development. We would hope to include all girls from the two public schools from grades 5-8.

Update (November 17, 2011)

Our "Healthy Girls" workshops are scheduled for 2 afternoon sessions; Wednesday November 23rd and Wednesday November 30th, 2011. We have many outstanding women coming to present to our female students. The presenters include our Public Health Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Social Worker, Beautician, Aerobic/Yoga instructor and Senior High School students.

We have sent out letters, invitations and are now looking at setting up for our afternoon sessions.

Update (January 17, 2012)

Our Healthy Girls workshops were a huge success. We had outstanding guest speakers from our community come in to discuss many issues with our female students. The students received information on healthy eating, skin care and make-up application, body image and self confidence, self esteem and internet and texting etiquette. As well, we participated in a yoga and aerobics work out with a discussion about being a "Strong Girl" A small group of students from our neighbouring high school also attended our workshops and did a presentation on the inequalities among women in different parts of the world.

As a follow up the girls have shown an interest in participating in an after school exercise program. We are starting a core training program this week and next week we will be having our first Zumba class.
