A Legacy of History - Historical Landmarks

A "Legacy of History" project is a community literacy based historical project that is designed to engage students in the community. Students will create a social network with senior residents and partners to collect historical landmark information in the community and surrounding areas. This project will give students and community members the opportunity to work together to capture historical landmarks and to learn about their stories. Students will create videos, a digital library of images, presentations and booklets of the landmark information including interviews of their community partners and their reflections on the historical landmarks. Collected information will also be shared and stored with New Brunswick Provincial Archives.

Project Reflection

Margie Goodin, Teacher, Cambridge-Narrows Community School

A Legacy of History project has been a wonderful opportunity, as it allowed the community to join with us to perform research, discuss details of historical landmarks and to build a community network, thus allowing students to meet new community members. This project has also allowed students to form their own interpretation of the historical landmarks.

This project has been very rewarding because it allowed me to witness the students’ social transformations throughout the project. The students learned many technology aspects, but the most evident was their social skills and the social network they built with the community.

A Legacy of History project has been an exemplar for teaching colleagues, as it has given them the know how to began their own Project Based Learning (PBL) opportunities. This model is being used as a springboard to create new projects for our school, as many of the volunteers involved in the project are now willing to work on other initiatives launched within the school.

The school has been impacted by this project, as it has given the school much pride. The positive words that have been shared with colleagues and students have instilled pride in the high quality capabilities of our students and staff.

The district has been impacted by this project, as students have presented to the District Education Council (DEC) and teacher has shared with other districts (D10 and D14) and the Department of Education (DOE) professional development session.

Students’ final products (booklet and iDVD) are stored at the New Brunswick Provincial Archives and is housed at the Cambridge-Narrows Regional Library and t
