Chancellor Composting Challenge

Our school would like to start a composting project at our school. We will use acceptable organic leftovers from our lunch programs and the staffroom. This will help decrease the amount of reusable and recyclable materials that are going into the garbage. Students have researched the materials and prices necessary for this project. We will use the compost to enrich the soil in our new beds in front of our school. This fits in well with our global citizenship school goals.

- All students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 have participated in Composting presentations from Green Action Centre: http://greenactioncentre.ca/content/presentation-topics/

- Materials have been purchased: Composter, 5 stainless steel pails, thermometer, turner, gloves, and shovels.

- Stainless steel pails have been placed in five different lunch rooms.

- Grades 4-6 Leadership students from IOTO ("It Only Takes One") pick up the compost daily and dump it in the outdoor composter.

- A couple of 2/3 multiage classes have started vermicomposting in their classrooms.

- On April 19, 2012 the composter was presented to the community at "Family Night."

- Watermelon rinds were rescued from the garbage after our school mini marathon and transported to the composter by our IOTO students!

- The outdoor compost will be managed by a few staff members throughout the summer and the compost will be used when we return in September.
