Dust

LISTEN, I READ
BOOK: DUST
AUTHOR: ARTHUR SLADE

Whose Responsibility is it?
A connection from Geography - a candy bar wrapper and whose responsibility is it to throw it away will move into other discussions throughout the term. For Number the Stars and the Danes helping the Jews. For Geography and global economics and fair trade to urbanization and planning - whose responsibility is it in our local community? This is the context for term 2. With the novel Dust, whose responsibility is it to reach out to the members of our community and how do we build those healthy relationships. Our students will then spend time going to Carberry - our feeder school -- reading picture books they have created to Grade 3's and develop reading buddies. They will also make a trip to our local retirement home and the students will determine what they would like to do to build a positive connection to the seniors in the home.

The students created books online to read to grade 3 students. They used Storybird and Bookemon, which are online tools to write and publish stories. It is free to use other site, however there is a fee if you would like to purchase a hard copy of the story you create, bound like a published book.

The links provided here will take you to stories created on Storybook. Its a great site for primary grade students, ESL and Special Education students.

Check theses sites out and start creating interesting stories with your students to share with the rest of the community :-)
