Window Gardening

Our SAGA (Social Awareness Global Action) group here at the school is interested in launching a division-wide gardening project. This project has two parts. The first part would be educating and instructing classrooms on how to create their own hydroponic vegetable window garden. Our goal would be to have a window garden in the majority of our school’s classrooms and have each classroom be responsible for sustaining their gardens. Taking what we learn from our window garden project, SAGA would then like to work towards creating a vegetable garden that could be used and cared for by the various schools and groups within the division.

Mise à jour (26 octobre 2012)

Due to issues with weather in the fall, our big plans for a large school garden have been delayed to next spring. At the moment, we are working on creating portable and fixed window gardens for different classrooms that will grow functional foods (such as herbs and vegetables) in the foods rooms and starting vertical planters for flowers in classrooms with adequate sunlight.

We have just purchased an assortment of herbs and edible food products to be planted in out outdoor planters in spring and in classrooms right now. The outdoor planters have been constructed and will be placed outside once the snow melts (later this week)

We have purchased two flower towers from Lee Valley along with some gardening tools designed for smaller hands to fill with the seeds that we start. The Flower towers have holes all down the sides to plant in and also have a central watering core to water everything simply. We are also using these flower towers as prototypes for further towers to use throughout the school
