Compost A-Peel

After consulting with Torry Reid from Growing Up Organic, The Green Team at Manotick Public School invited Gerry Baker from The Worm Factory to help us learn about and start vermi composting at our school.

Mise à jour (1 février 2010)

In February the whole school attended an excellent 45-min. assembly about vermi composting. Five classes got an exciting 30-min. workshop on starting and caring for a vermi compost habitat. The local paper took pictures and recognized our project with a picture and short write up in the local paper. Students learned how to make compost puree for the baby worms and became responsible for feeding the worms.

Mise à jour (1 mars 2010)

In March the Green Team created a bulletin board in the school, using the Vermi Worm Rap, to help share the vermi composting message. Students on the Green Team continued to care for the worms with the help of fellow classmates.

Mise à jour (1 juin 2010)

In June approximately 8 families from Manotick Public School will continue to care for vermi composts at home over the summer. Hopefully the worms will be back next year. The Green Team has shown great leadership with this initiative in environmental activism. The students, teachers and parents were very enthusiastic about the project. There was much discussion and learning as everyone embraced the responsibilities of vermi composting. The effects of this project will have impact on the school, the students and the community for years to come.
