Energy Conservation

The students will create a 15- 30 second Public Service Announcement (claymation, hand drawn or computer generated images) about conserving energy or they will talk about the benefits of different types of energy.

In early December our class went to the Peel Integrated Waste Management site. The students had a presentation outlining what can and can not be recycled and how the plant deals with the recycled materials and materials that are added to recycling that are not supposed to be recycled. The plant has automatic tin can catchers and there were workers who had to pick through recycled materials because some things were not supposed to be there.

The most exciting part was the bus tour of the plant. We went into loading bay while a garbage truck came and dumped its load. we were amazed at what was in the garbage- mattresses, buckets, dolls, miscellaneous clumps of colour that were no longer identifiable. The compost pile was steaming and it almost looked like it was on fire. There were pumpkins left over from Halloween.

We also learned facts about recycling. The centre sells tin cans and plastic so they can be made into other things like car seats, shoes lace or mats. It was a pretty cool experience.

Wow the Directors Cut was FUN! We learned a lot about technology and movies. To warm us up, we did a camera scavenger hunt so that we could learn about the camera parts. We brainstormed ideas as a group and sketched out what we wanted on a story board. Then we took pictures of scenes from our ideas. We uploaded them to groups macbooks and turned them into comic style using a computer program. It was SO COOL! We wrapped up with sound effects and dialog balloons and we were finished. The Directors Cut at our school was an amazing experience that was really fun. By Myles

Directors Cut was very fun. When they came to our school there were two instructors names Carl and Sarah. The were very nice. They brought camera and laptops. We had to make our comic about energy. Our movie was about a family that was cleaning a lake when suddenly an earthquake happened and Super Sonica came and saved a little kid. The Kid turned into an evil bad guy because he was struck by the lightening. Our group took about 20 pictures of us in action and sometimes we used props. After we loaded the pictures into the laptops and added music and speech bubbles. Our comics is great and I had an awesome experience. By Isha

The Directors cut was so much fun! A few instructors came and taught us everything we needed to know. First you start with an idea about energy. Then you start taking action shot pictures with a camera. You upload the pictures to a computer and use a program that makes us look like comic book characters. Once you have done that you move on to the best part.....voicing. Then comes the final step- adding crazy music and sound effects. Now you've made you comic. The best part was we even got a dvd to take home so we can watch it over and over again. The directors cut was awesome. By Daniel

When the Directors Cut came to our classroom they told a new way to get our attention by saying, " lights, camera action" We learned different ways of using a camera and different angles. For example the long shot, mid shot and a close shot. We also had an activity to do. The activity was to get us to get used to the camera so we could use it properly for our graphic novel. We had to take pictures of letters, faces, actions and self portraits. After the activity we planned what our main idea would be. Then we started taking picture after picture. After our pictures were uploaded on a laptop and we added words, sound, special sound effects and speech bubbles.
