Reach Out

LISTEN, I READ
BOOK: Ru
TRANSLATED BY: SHEILA FISCHMAN

Porter Creek Secondary in Whitehorse has students grade 8-12 and a school population of 550. Our grade nine class will be taking on this project to reach out to people of the community, realize the origins/plights of others and rediscover that everyone has a common ground/common needs deep down. Through class discussions about the situation of the main character, and a study of the history and geography presented in the book, and finally with the interview with a community member, we hope to realize the plight of others while appreciating aspects of our own lives and our country, Canada. Our final project will involve small groups of students interviewing a member of the community, discussing this member's ethnic origin, motivations, experiences, goals and dreams.
