Students for People with Disabilities

The project will build an awareness and understanding of people with special needs and disabilities. The first stage of the project will bring together students who demonstrate excellence in inclusion with students who need to develop an understanding of inclusion. Students from our school's C.O.P.E. Dog program would lead the project. Students from grades 9 through 12 English classes would take part in the project. Students will examine what it means to live with a disability. They will examine what it means through one-on-one conversation, books, movies, guest speakers, and field trips. Students will build relationships with each other, people with disabilities and with community organizations that support people with disabilities. In the second stage of the project, students will create presentations based on their learning. The final stage of the project will see students doing presentations for classes, family and the community. This will allow the students to demonstrate their leadership skills. The project will help students build relationships with individuals they might not otherwise connect with. The project will afford students the opportunity to see how people with disabilities live and thrive. Students will engage in experiential learning, which includes active learning and in doing so will demonstrate their caring. The project demonstrates all of the required themes.

Students who are particularly interested have agreed to MC a guest speaker event. Others will learn to train fellow students in sensitivity training. I hope to evolve this into a yearly event to raise awareness of our COPE Dog program, students with disabilities and raise awareness for disabilities in general.
