"Eat Your Art Out"

The Rideau High School Art Club, our 7 art classes, and other interested students, will create works of art that reflect their ideas of, and experiences with, food. In preparation for the creation of these works of art, students will examine and discuss the different ways that food can be approached, such as food as a necessity, food as comfort, and food as a serious world issue. Students will also examine the points of view that artists have brought to the subject of food, and the different mediums they have used to express these points of view.

During the spring of 2012, the students’ art will form a school art show for all students and staff to attend. People attending the show will be provided with sticky notes on which to record their own thoughts about food. These sticky notes will be collected and framed to create an art piece for the school. Admittance to the art show will be one dollar, or one can of food. All proceeds will go to the Ottawa Food Bank.

Following the in-school art show, the show will be moved into the community. The students’ art will be displayed, and sold, at restaurants that provide space for local Ottawa artists. The proceeds from the sale of the art will be donated to the Ottawa Food Bank.

We will also have an “empty bowls” project. Students and staff will make bowls from clay. The bowls will be sold with soup to raise funds for the Ottawa Food Bank.
