Where We Fit in the World Village

Starting with the math story "If the World Were a Village" as a literacy link, we plan to research and collect data regarding culture, equity and diversity specifically examining nationalities and ethnicity, schooling and literacy, hunger, commercial consumption, earning power in comparison of their school/community and other schools/communities throughout the world in an effort to raise awareness of social justice. We will start gather data through internet research and contact with student-partners in various countries via sources such as keypals, epals. We plan to compile data and display data in various forms to highlight similarities and disparities that shape student-thinking and perpetuate stereotypes. These data displays will be featured at the parent-community workshops of the upcoming OAME 2011 Math Conference in Windsor, Ontario.
