Equality: Camp Olympia 2018

Camp Olympia high school leadership camp is an incredible event that has run for the past 27 years through the Toronto Catholic District School Board. These 12 ambitious and socially conscience students from Madonna CSS would like to host this weekend experience for 200 plus of their peers from other TCDSB schools. As camp hosts they plan to organize and facilitate an experiential learning platform with the theme of equality. They plan to work with their peers to discuss social justice issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and many more. These very driven students want to impact change through building awareness and community at this camp experience.

Camp Olympia: The Common Unity Experience

The sole mission of Madonna Catholic Secondary School’s Core Team was to spread the message of “common unity” to 300 secondary school students within the TCDSB. Student leaders from 10 different schools (and the Madonna core team) went to Camp Olympia in Huntsville, Ontario from April 26-28. During the weekend, we focused on these 10 different social justice topics: mental health, beauty standards, racism, sexism, homophobia, poverty, environmentalism, feminism, youth homelessness and xenophobia. Awareness was brought to these 10 topics through activities and tasks led by student leaders. Videos, lip syncs, spirit wear, banners, guest speakers, and discussions were some of the activities and tasks that happened during our Camp Olympia weekend. Everyone had a great time and went with away armed with some new knowledge on how to make lasting change in today’s world.
