Seven Oaks Met School Public Bike Repair Stand

Andrew is very passionate about bikes. His goal this year for his school based project is to create a public bike repair stand that students and members of the community can use to tune-up their bike if a repair shop is not nearby. His ultimate goal is to start a bike interest club at our school where he can facilitate bike building workshops and eventually create a fleet of bikes that can be used for school field trips or for an after school program. The $300 will be used for purchasing materials and all of the tools required to build the repair stand.

Here is the final product of Andrew's work on this project! Andrew started this project by reaching out to a mentor at Garden City Collegiate. Mr. Hall was the one who trained Andrew to use new power tools such as a drill press, grinder, and mig welder. After receiving appropriate training Andrew sketched out his plans for a bike repair stand and then presented them to Mr. Hall. Mr. Hall guided Andrew, made several suggestions and after they put the plan into action! From there, as you can see from previous pictures, Andrew made use of scrap metal to create the base, the pipes of the stand and the joints. Applying his new skills of mig welding and grinding, he was able to weld all the pieces together. Finally, Andrew used the drill press to drill holes to attach the cable tied tools to the joint piece of metal and also drilled holes at the bottom of the base for installation in the fall. The final part of the project included drafting our school division's logo (the tree) and having it cut out by a CDC machine. The stand was then spray painted blue (one of our school's colours) and the logo painted green (other school colour). The tools were then clamped to cables and their bindings and then slotted through the drilled holes. The final touch was gluing foam installation that's typically used for plumbing over the top part of the stand, to allow the seats of bikes to rest as repairs could be done. A bike pump was also purchased so that people could fill their tires with air. Andrew hopes to create a metal stand that houses the pump so that everyone can use it, and so that it's secure for the public, without posing risk of theft. Another great project idea for next year! From here on out, Andrew's goal is to use this stand for bike education for students that are hoping to learn how to fix their bikes.

This year Andrew mentored youth from various schools in Seven Oaks School Division and provided bike education using his bike repair stand. He worked alongside Peter Obendoerfer to provide mentorship and took students along bike routes!
