Sisler Breakfast Program

The Sisler Breakfast Club hopes to provide students with a small breakfast at least twice a week. By providing a healthy and nourishing meal, we hope to show students the benefit of leading a healthy lifestyle while seeking to combat issues of poverty and social inequality.

Update (April 19, 2018)

Sisler's Breakfast Club was successfully started in October 2017. With over 50 student volunteers, we provide approximately 60 - 80 students with a "grab and go" style breakfast three times a week. We offer granola bars, fresh fruit (oranges, apples, pears, bananas and a variety of berries) as well as yogurt, banana bread and muffins on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Thanks to the generous support from te Imagineaction grant, we are able to continue to supply the population of our school with free breakfast throughout the year. We are very grateful for your support and hope to continue to sustain the program throughout the academic year and in years to come.

Update (June 5, 2018)

Sisler High School started a Breakfast Club in September 2017. A group of roughly 20 student volunteers and 8 teachers volunteered their time every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 AM - 8:45 AM to distribute healthy food options for the close to 2,000 students at Sisler High School. On average, 100 students accessed the program. The program ran from September 2017 - June 2018.

Sisler Breakfast Club volunteers also participated in a Food Justice Club, one day a week at NorWest Community Coop where they learned about nutrition, practical cooking skills, menu planning, and budgeting.

A study was conducted by the student volunteers over the course of the year of students, teachers and administrators at Sisler. Over 99% of those surveyed considered the Breakfast Club to be a good idea and a positive addition to the school environment. Students surveyed noted that they felt comfortable at the club and enjoyed the ability to get free food in the mornings, of which some noted was not available to them. Numerous students also stated the success of the Breakfast Club is attributed to the fact that the the food is available and free to everyone at Sisler.

The results of the study was presented at the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium on April 28th 2018. The students received a gold medal award in the Senior level and best group for the Biological Science Category which included a plaque and cash prize award of $150. The students generously donated this money back into the Breakfast Club.

Thanks to the generous support from Imagineaction and other grants, the Sisler Breakfast Club is able to help the student population create community, educate one another about healthy options and nutrition, and support those who are in need of food on a regular basis. Sisler High School would like to thank the Canadian Teachers' Federation for their financial support without which the program would not exist.
