Daisies For Diabetes

St. John School has a 60% Self-Identified First Nations Student demographic and thus, we know through research that diabetes affects 1 in 3 First Nations Peoples. Therefore, students will create and participate in a community awareness campaign to bring the issue of diabetes, and how this disease can be combated, to light through selling bouquets of daisies and then donating the proceeds to the local Municipality to purchase community playground equipment that the whole community can access because exercise is a major way of combating diabetes.

Mise à jour (9 juin 2018)

Well, another successful “Daisies for Diabetes” Campaign for St. John School. During the month of March, the students were able to raise $509.00 and more importantly bring awareness to this devastating decease that affects 1 in 5 First Nations People in the Province of Ontario. This year marked a milestone for the “Daisies for Diabetes” Campaign, as for the first time it was completely student driven and ran, with Teacher Facilitator Mr. Doherty being called upon when needed for advice.
Money from this year’s campaign was given to St. John School to be put towards offsetting the cost of its new Gaga Ball structure that is enjoyed by the whole community. Students learned that exercise is a major combatant against the battle of diabetes and thus, it was only fitting that they supported something that they wanted as a means of physical activity.

A cheque was presented to St. John School Teacher in Charge Ms. Litwin for $509.00 and this money was put toward the purchase of a Gaga Ball structure that was erected on school grounds for all the community of Red Lake to enjoy. This year marked a milestone for the "Daisies For Diabetes" Campaign, as it was entirely student ran, with SJS grade 8 student Erika Graham being the campaign chairperson.
