Calming Spaces at Priestman Street School

Having a place for students to self calm is crucial to being able to stay and participate in class time and learning. When kids feel overwhelmed they need both the strategies and the tools to be able to self calm, and the project would allow guidance to provide tools to each teacher to provide a calming space in their classrooms for students. Guidance would also do whole class instruction on how to use the strategies and tools provided to the teacher. Having a space in the room is important for our students as they are not all able to visit guidance when feeling overwhelmed.

Calming Spaces has been a huge success here at Priestman School. We used the ZONES program and we consultation a local psychologist to help design spaces both in the classrooms and outside the classrooms. Giving students spaces to help them self regulate has been good for all students in the school. A new room for students to have privacy and quiet if needed was built and painted, as well as spaces inside each classroom.

Spaces in both wings were set up for kids to have a space to calm themselves as well as baskets in each class.
