Reconciliation Mural

The students, specifically the grade 8s will be creating a mural which represents the acknowledgement of 'lost cultural connections, lost language, and lost connection to water' as a result of confederation and residential schools. As well, it will be looking to make a connection to reconcile with lost language, lost culture and lost connection to water by exploring the idea of enduring presence.

Our Reconciliation project focused on the Lost Knowledge of Water, Lost knowledge of Culture and Language, as these relate to Missing and Murdered F.N.M. and I Women and Girls. Students walked along Wendigo Creek, which is a buried creek under our school that runs all the way to High Park.

Students collaborated on a collection of Murals with a First Nations Collective Aura, Chief Lady Bird and Mitch. We looked more specifically at Water in these five Murals.

We also invited Barry Prophet to offer his Sound Art & Environmental Music creation program to the grade 8 students at Annette Street Public School in Toronto. The students learned how to use Audacity Freeware for creating Sound Art. The thematic goal of the student compositions was to interpret the crisis of Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women in Canada and related issues of isolation & the marginalized.
