Closing the Gap

The Grade four class at Mary Queen of Peace will work with St. John Bosco Kindergarten students in a literacy mentoring project.

Mary Queen of Peace is a much more affluent school in my city. My teacher colleague there has proposed that we work together to provide for my students some of the things her students have in abundance and can take for granted. It will provide students with an opportunity to connect with peers who will read to them and complete literacy activities related to the books they read. In working together the older students will provide a wonderful example of the benefits and joys that can be experienced from sharing quality literature.

Mise à jour (3 juin 2016)

he Grade 5 Class from Mary Queen of Peace visited our class last week. They came with books (and many other items) which they read to the children. After we talked about this act of kindness and decorated a popsicle which said, "It's Cool To Be Kind" Finally, we shared real popsicles with our grade 5 buddies.
We had an amazing day of learning and fun!

Mise à jour (13 juin 2016)

The children are still talking about the visit from there "friends" from Mary Queen of Peace. They are choosing the books they brought for their quiet reading and asking me to read them to them. The children also brought play doh with them, this is now their favorite center!
The kindergarten students each created a thank you card where they listed the highlights of their day with them. We have sent theses to the class.
My students definitely experienced first hand that it is "cool to be kind". and have been reaping the benefits of the new materials that were added to our classroom
