Basketball Club

I teach in at risk community as such since 2009, I have been opening the gym for students to play basketball at lunch. This provide a safe place for 30-40 students to play each day. It allows me to mentor the students by developing positive relationships and this leads to success in the classroom.

Update (April 6, 2016)

The community of Lawrence Heights faces various challenges including poverty and violence. As such, I open the gym from the second day of school until the end ofJune, during the lunch hour for students to play a variety of sports. Students are provided with a safe and supervised space to play. This program has allowed me to become more effective in the classroom as I develop better relationships with the students. I average about 40 students a day who attend the program between 11:45am to 12:25pm. I have 10 minutes to each lunch.

Update (May 31, 2016)

Each day of the week, students participate in a variety of sports in our school gym. I offer basketball but it was attracting mostly boys. As an equitable school, we offer basketball to students Monday, Wednesday and Friday and badminton and beach ball the other days of the week. Also,we rotate the schedule based on the season to provide students a safe place to play sports.
