Aboriginal Student Committee

I would like to implement an Aboriginal Student Council here at our school. With this council, I hope to instill leadership skills, a sense of community and a sense of belonging in our Aboriginal students. Too often, Aboriginal students feel alienated in schools because their culture and beliefs are not reflected effectively in the school environment--I hope to change all that. Currently and with the help of my students, we cook bannock every Tuesday at lunch and offer it to all students at no charge. This has been an excellent way to build community in our school, but there are many more things I would like to accomplish, I just do not have the funds to do so. For example, I would also like to host a powwow here in our school, but again, that is a costly event. My ultimate goal is for our student council to be one hundred percent self-sufficient in terms of cost. I want to sell our bannock, sell our beading and dream catchers and host events that will bring in donations to keep our student council going, but I need some initial capital for that to become a reality. I hope you will consider my project for this grant. I think it is an incredibly worthwhile cause that you can help me succeed at. Thank you.

Thanks to Imagineaction, our Aboriginal Student Committee was able to buy tons of materials and create items such as dream catchers, barrettes, earrings, bracelets, and paintings that were then sold at a local craft sale. We raised over 260$ to continue funding our program, but more importantly, students learned that they can be leaders. Many students gained the oh-so-vitally needed volunteer hours and learned (or honed) a new skill. It was a great opportunity and a lot of fun to see the students out in the community interacting with others. Thanks again!

Tomorrow Superior CVI is hosting our first ever powwow! It is an open event to all community members and we will have traditional dancing, showcases of student achievements, tours of the school, a BBQ and be making bannock for everyone. All of this was organized and run by the Aboriginal Student Committee. They are amazing!
