Making Scarfs for the homeless

Students will work at lunch to make scarves from finger knitting.
They will donate some of the scarves and the profits from the sale
of the other scarfs to the homeless shelter.

The students in the knitting club at Oakenwald School have been working diligently learning how to knit using either their arm or a loom. Sixteen students from grades 3-5 are participating in the Knitting Club on a regular basis. The first few weeks were spent learning how to knit. Once the students learned the technique they were able to independently work on their creations. The students are enjoying being creative. They have been trying different types and colours of yarn in completing both their creation either using the arm knitting and loom knitting technique.

The Knitting Club at Oakenwald school has just finished running for the 2015-2016 school year. A total of 53 hats, 32 scarves and 3 neck warmers were completed by the sixteen participants. The creations will be donated to Chase the Chill and Siloam Mission in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Both of these organizations help people that need warm winter clothing. The Oakenwald Knitting club was a great success! The students learned new skills and were able to use those new skills to create end products that will help people in our local community keep warm in the coming winter. The students are looking forward to join the Knitting Club in the 2016-2017 school year.
