Everyone Wins

“If you look with your heart, you will see the thirsty little tree before you.
In your hands is the power to help it grow.” Lakota Elder

Reading is important to everyone and everybody loves to be read to especially Elders and children. We can make Elders and Children feel important and included by reading to them. Often our Elders feel sad and alone. We are going to help our Elders be less lonely by visiting them and reading to them once a week. We also know that little children enjoy being acknowledged by people who are a bit older than they are. One way we can make children feel special is by reading to them. We are going to read to the children in daycare, Head Start and kindergarten.

Being “proactive” about our futures: the added benefit to reading to our Elders and children is that we will get reading practice. Reading practice leads to reading excellence! The Grade 5-6 class at Alexis School have identified that one of the leading causes of poverty is not having the skills to get and keep a job that pays enough to raise a family. We also acknowledge that reading scores for our classroom are quite a bit lower than reading scores at other Canadian schools. Therefore, we are committing to becoming better readers. Being proactive is win win for everyone!
