Stop It - Let's Stop Poverty

A motivated group of students spanning the grades at Heritage School meets weekly to form and enact action plans to help children and adults living in poverty. Many of our own students and families live in poverty, including some students taking action through this group, resulting in a passionate team. Our projects encompass education (educating ourselves and the wider community), action (supporting school and community wide initiatives such as food drives and fundraisers to help people living in poverty), and citizenship (contacting government leaders about our concerns). The students drive the project with teacher support and promote the initiatives to the rest of our school and wider community.

Mise à jour (3 juin 2015)

Two student social action groups and one of the Grade 4/5 classes took a tour of Siloam Mission to further educate ourselves about poverty issues in Winnipeg and to motivate students to donate more items and to encourage others in our community to donate items to Siloam Mission.

Mise à jour (20 août 2015)

We were glad to be able to help the people at Siloam Mission through our item collection. Small groups of students in the Keep the Promise Club made videos and presented to each class to get them educated about our goal and motivated to donate to the mission.

Mise à jour (20 août 2015)

We also hosted a Diabetes Dance-a-thon at our school to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Winnipeg. One of our students has Type 1 Diabetes and prepared a presentation with a classmate about the disease, his own experience, and how community members can help. With a small investment toward some snacks to serve during the Dance-a-thon, we raised $210 for the JDRF, which doubled thanks to a Double Your Impact Campaign at the time of our donation.
