Learning Skills for Sharing

My students and I are learning about many organizations that need our help in our community and around the world. We are trying to raise money to help these organizations by selling and donating things that we make. We have learned to knit and would like expand our arts and crafts skills by learning to hand sew, sew by machine and bake.

Update (June 10, 2014)

Earlier this year, we learned to sew ornaments using felt. We used patterns and created our own to make unique felt decorations. We sold these ornaments to our local school community and raised over $300! This money was donated to a Haitian organization (Little Footprints, Big Steps) founded by a youth from our community of Whitehorse!

As sewing is an important skill, we will further our knowledge by learning how to sew using a sewing machine.

Update (June 10, 2014)

Success! Proud of his own ornament.

Update (June 10, 2014)

Can you see all our handmade ornaments? I am proud of my students!

Update (June 13, 2014)

Throughout the year we also learned to knit. It is a great exercise to teach students about stereotypes and that in fact knitting is not only an activity for females. Also, it develops fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. We learned to knit dishcloths among many other things.

Update (June 13, 2014)

A sample of a dishcloth knit by a grade 7 student.
