Children’s Garden “Families Learn Gardening Together”

Over the last three years we have created a school garden, and have grown all kinds of vegetables, shrubs, trees, and flowering perennials. The garden is called “Upsala Public School Children’s Garden.”

The “Families Learn Gardening Together” project is a natural extension of our Garden Project. Garden Workshops were held at the school on April 21, April 28, May 5, and May 12, 2010. We arranged to have speakers at our school to help us learn more about gardening, we were fortunate to have expert speakers on different aspects of gardening. Over the four weeks, participants were able to have their soil tested, obtain a perennial plant, given giant pumpkin seeds, and enter free draws to win tomatoes, flowering plants, and garden books.

The Garden Workshops were well attended. We were able to track the attendance by having everyone enter a draw to win door prizes. The participants included students, parents, grandparents, and community members. Each family was given a garden journal to record information learned at the workshops and to serve as a record of their future gardening endeavours.
