Project Care

The focus of our project will be caring for others and our environment in order to develop a deeper appreciation and respect for both. We are planning a trip to a long-term care facility to care for the elderly and the construction and planting of a small garden at the front of our school. As a class, we are looking to develop a stronger and deeper appreciation of others within and outside of our classroom. Also to better understand and appreciate our special relationship with the environment by providing some hands-on interaction.

Update (June 20, 2012)

On April 17th Mr. Hilton's grade 6 class took a trip to Longworth Long Term Care Facility as part of our community outreach project. Many students didn't know what to expect and were quite nervous! After a tour of the facility we gathered together in a common room on the main floor. That is when the fun began! Several residents came down to join us in a paper airplane making contest. After introducing ourselves, we sat together and started making our planes, talking and laughing and having fun with the residents. When our building time was up, we all had the chance to fly our planes and some of us won awards! Before leaving we helped pass out drinks and cookies to our new friends. It was a memorable experience as many of the students were worried that the residents wouldn’t be as lively and as fun as they were. It certainly changed our perspective of elderly people and was an enjoyable part of our outreach project!

Update (June 25, 2012)

Here are some of the student reflections that were written after our visit to Longworth Long Term Care Facility.
“I had lots of fun at Longworth for many reasons. First, I really enjoyed taking a tour of the place since I never had been there before. Next, we got to make paper airplanes with new people we’ve never met. Lastly, I loved how us children and the elderly can break down the stereotype between us. I had a great experience at Longworth and would love to go and visit again.”

“My visit to Longworth was very fun and exciting. First, because in the beginning of the day we got a tour of Longworth. Next, we made airplanes with the elderly. In addition to that, a women wanted to throw her paper airplane again and again. Finally we got to hang out with the elderly for the rest of the morning. These are some of the reasons why I found my visit to Longworth fun and exciting.”

“My experience at Longworth was really fun. We got to make new friends with the elderly. Also, making paper airplanes with the elders was really fun. From this trip I learned how I can be Jesus to others.”

“My experiences at Longworth made me change my views about elders. My view changed because normally people would think that they would not want to spend time with us because they would think we were loud and we don’t talk about the same things we do. I think it was a great experience for us to spend time with them to make them happy and making them feel like we care because we do.”
