Leadership Club

Sir John Franklin Middle School is going to start a leadership club this fall, open to students in Grades 5-9. Although the projects will be student-directed, staff would like to provide students with the opportunity to learn leadership skills (i.e.: communication, organization, morals and values, relationship skills, planning, and decision-making), develop a sense of citizenship by helping the local and global community, and learn about social justice issues. Students will participate in workshops, volunteer in the community, meet with community leaders and organizations, and learn other valuable skills.
SJF's sponsor child, Memory, and her community in Zambia, will benefit from the leadership club through monthly financial donations and planned donated gifts.
The school is home to three special education classes – for students with mental health concerns, low-functioning Autism, and developmental delays. These classes will benefit from the Leadership Club by being invited to participate and by emulating and learning from the students involved in the leadership club. Additionally, the general student population will follow the example of those involved in the Leadership Club in how they interact with the special education students. Projects can even be planned for the Special Education classes.
SJF's Leadership Club will benefit students within the school, the immediate community, Calgary, Canada and the international community.

Update (April 11, 2012)

Our Leadership Club at Sir John Franklin is lucky to have the opportunity to participate in YMCA's Leadership-in-Training program. They will provide us with six sessions between now and June, on such topics as communication skills, citizenship, global awareness, decision-making, etc. We are very excited because not only will our Leadership Club participate, but other students in the school as well.
This year we have also organized fund raisers and an activity day for the school.

Update (May 29, 2012)

As the school year draws to a close, so too do our Leadership-in-Training sessions through the YMCA. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have learned numerous skills - communication, qualities of a good leader, and patience, just to name a few. We are very appreciative of the contributions made by the YMCA and we hope to have them back in the future!
