Gifts From the Heart

Having personal connections with patients with cancer sparked a new service learning project at our school this year. A group of students wanting to make a difference got together at recess and after school to put their sewing skills to the test. The school purchased flannelet material in many bright and cheerful patterns and colours. Students also raised money to purchase material by making and selling Christmas cards and tags .The material was used to make pillow cases for the cancer ward at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. The realization is that cancer has touched all our lives. So creating something that these patients may enjoy and get some comfort out of was born! Students in the Family Studies program also worked on these pillow cases, along with other interested students and staff. Students were able to donate fifty pillowcases, to the hospital at Christmas. They were warmly received by the staff and patients at the hospital and students learned a valuable life lesson. Their goal is to continue to make pillow cases so patients will receive one to take home with them.
