Stand up for what is Right

The purpose of our project is to get students thinking about their actions and to promote a more positive environment at our school. We hope to run monthly themes at the school promoting positive citizenship. We want to purchase a laminating machine and make posters that will be displayed throughout the school to create an atmosphere of awareness and positive action. We will also purchase mural cloth and painting supplies to add murals to our gym. Some themes we would like to focus on are:
Anti-bullying – Be a buddy not a bully,
Positive lifestyle choices – Drugs can really bring you down
Acceptance of diversity – take a stand against discrimination,
Inclusive practices – no one can do everything but everyone can do something
Environmental stewardship – The Earth is ours to protect
Leadership – Plan your influence, because you will have an impact
Positive energy - Believe in your abilities
We believe that if you are surrounded with positive and encouraging messages they will be more apt to think positively and that this will result in the creation of a school that embraces and encourages all students.

Update (October 25, 2011)

We have had our first meeting this school year and have selected the topic for our first poster campaign. The students have decided to design posters to focus on anti-bullying messages. They have designed several posters and will meet each Tuesday evening from 6-8:30pm to begin creating the final products. A wide range of displays will be created from computer generated, painted, free hand drawing to tissue paper 3-D posters. I am excited to see the final products. We hope to have this campaign ready and running for the months of November and December.

Update (January 24, 2012)

The social action group has been meeting since May 2011. There are 6 students who meet every Tuesday night from 6:30 t0 8:00 pm to work on poster and mural design. To date we have designed one murals which is partly painted. The mural has the theme "a person's a person no matter how small", focusing on respect for all individuals.

This past month we put our murals on hold to run an anti-bullying campaign in our school in conjunction with a school wide forum to educate students on what bullying is and the role the by stander plays. After midterms we plan to return to the murals with the hope of completing 4 before year end.

We have used our funds to date to purchase paint, laminating pouches and poster paper. The laminators were too expensive so we solicited other funds to purchase a roll laminator and would like to purchase coloured ink for the printer for the next poster campaign in place of the laminator.

Update (March 19, 2012)

Students continue to meet Tuesday nights to design and complete posters and murals. We are presently working on murals. We received funding from an alternate source to purchase a more expensive roll laminator so will use the funds obtained to purchase laminator pouches and roll laminate rather than to purchase a laminator. We also need markers and drawing pencils as many students are using this for poster design.

Update (May 29, 2012)

We are coming to the end of our mural/poster project. We have three murals just about ready to put in the gym. I have attached three pictures. We feel the campaigns held were effective and we hope to continue with this project in the fall.
