Armour Heights Social Justice Club Initiatives

We are in our first year running a Social Justice Club at Armour Heights. At the beginning of the school year, the students in the club set for themselves two goals: to raise awareness about global issues (such as poverty, natural disasters, disease, water safety, exploitation, etc.) and to raise $2,500 in funds in order to support Free the Children projects around the world.

So far, our students have worked very hard, raising around $800 towards their overall goal. They have also brought the issue of poverty forward to the other students in our school. At Halloween, our club ran a Halloween for Hunger campaign, bringing in 534 pounds of non-perishable food for our local food bank. At Christmas, we held a toy drive, with 102 toys brought in for children of all ages.

For the remainder of the year, our Social Justice Club is determined to fundraise extensively in order to reach our $2500 goal. The fundraisers that we are looking to run include a bake sale, a movie and popcorn buyout, a car wash (possibly), Four Days for Freedom, a teacher “appreciation” event, a walk for water, and a silk screen t-shirt sale.

Update (April 19, 2011)

Our Social Justice Club has been working very hard to acheive our goals. We have already passed our goal of $2500. We are currently at $2600 and still going strong. We have recently gone on a Water Walk, which was organized by Trent Hands for Haiti. From going on the walk for water, we raised $950 in all. We have learned about the poor quality of water that other places have, and the difference between our water usage and theirs. We have also organized a bake sale, which was very successful. We raised just under $400. We are currently raising awareness, through our 5 Days for Freedom campaign. In this campaign, the issues that have been sharing include thirst, disease, poverty, and exploitation. We are very excited about our campaigns and hope that all of our success continues into the future.
Thank you.

Update (January 25, 2012)

The Armour Heights Social Justice Club, in June 2011, reached the halfway mark of their goal to raise $8500 to build a school in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. We have partnered with Free the Children - that is who the funds will be going to in order to make a difference in Haiti. We initiated many fundraising projects to help us reach $4200. We did a bake sale, pizza sales, movie and popcorn days, t-shirt sales, and a water walk. Imagineaction's grant helped us to cover costs to pay for the items that were sold, giving us the chance to receive all of the profits from those events. Our goal for the next school year is now to raise the rest of the money that is needed to build the school in Haiti. Only $4300 more to go!
