Marine and Culture Exploration
1. A Community Study: After a preliminary preparatory session, we plan to travel to the nearby community of Cox’s Cove. The group will split into two groups for the following half day activities:
• A boat trip where students will learn the history of this isolated area of the Bay of Islands – learning (and seeing) about the large number of communities that were moved during resettlement, their relationships with the fisheries of the past.
• A dockside session with a fisherman where students will learn about the fisheries of the present and the relationship between the community viability and the fishery and fish plant.
In both sessions, there will be a focus on changes in technology for the fishery, changes locally due to climate change and their relationship with community life.
2. Ocean Pollution: Students will learn about the impacts of plastics and other ocean pollutants on marine life and do a clean-up of a nearby beach.
