Grant Sine Grade 5/6 Community Skills Building

My Grade 5/6 class will go on an overnight trip to the Ganaraska Forest Centre. There, we will participate in the Centre's programs and, in the process, develop teambuilding and cooperation skills. My students will also work towards developing their leadership skills, which they will put to use within the school community. They will also increase socially acceptable responses to situations and work towards positive social interactions. Overall, this project will work to promote a positive sense of family and community within the school setting. Grant Sine Public School is a low-income school, many of its students come from low-income housing, this grant will allow them an opportunity they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Update (April 20, 2011)

We are currently preparing for our field trip to Ganaraska Forest, which will take place on April 21. Originally, the trip was going to be an overnight trip. However, we have had to change our plans due to cost. We will be going to the Ganaraska Forest Centre for a day trip, which will include the entire school. While there, the grade 5/6's will be engaged in a variety of activities that promote a better understanding of the values of leadership and teamwork. They will be learning activities that they can bring back here to Sine and share with our younger grades. The students in grades K-4 will be involved in a variety of outdoor education activities while at the outdoor center. They will enjoy a campfire and lunch made by the older students.

Update (January 30, 2012)

The students here at Grant Sine Public school had a wonderful experience at the Ganaraska Forest Center. Although we did not go on the overnight trip as a grade 5/6 class, we invited all the students at our school to come with us and participate in a day long team building experience. Together we participated in the Centre's programs and developed cooperation skills, leadership skills and strengthened our family dynamics.
