Reclaiming Our Compost

Our current composting program has been put on hold because of a rodent problem. We really want to remedy the problem so that we can reclaim our composting program so that it is back up and running effectively. Previously, the compost collected from our students has been used in our school flowerbeds. Our intention is to form a partnership with the local Seniors Resource Council and the Gateway Manor Meal Program. The staff at the Gateway Manor Meal Program has agreed to provide us with their compostable materials rather than sending them to the local landfill site. Our students are prepared to compost the materials from the Manor and the materials collected from our own school. Our hope is to compost enough material to donate high quality compost that will help the plants flourish in the Memory Flower Garden that the Seniors Resource Council has recently created in town.

Update (January 16, 2012)

Turnable enclosed composters were purchased and stainless steel compost bins are now located in every classroom along with the School Aged Daycare, and Gateway Manor. Each classroom collects compostable material during the nutrition breaks and it is deposited into the compost bins.

A slab for the bins is yet to be put down for the bins but materials have been purchased.
