Swingin' with Seniors

We have only just begun with the development of a school band, less than 2 years actually. However, they would like to expand their horizons by performing at two senior homes in our area. One is in our community and the other is 130 km away at the larger centre of St. Anthony. They have been discussing this for some time but the logistics of doing this has always thwarted their efforts. I feel that this opportunity through Imagineaction would be such a plus for both our students and our seniors.

Update (February 22, 2012)

The original project “Swingin With The Seniors” was a project to encourage students to learn to play wind instruments. We began with 10 students hoping to have more students join us but because of limited funds and interest we did not have other students join the club. However, we did travel to St. Anthony with the group and performed at the senior’s home there and we went to school at St. Anthony and joined their band class for a couple of classes. This was a very good opportunity to experience a true Band Class.

We purchased a T-shirt for each band member from some of the funds to help create a sense of togetherness for our club. We attached a logo from Imagineaction on the shirts. The students enjoyed their trip to St. Anthony but we were not permitted to take pictures of any of the seniors with the band but we did take some pictures of the band at the senior’s center and the school performing.

We purchased another Clarinet for the band hoping to encourage more members this year. However, we have had a struggle to obtain a committed group of students to join the club. Also, our flute instructor moved to a new school.

However, we have at least 6 students who still wish to play in a wind band. We have 2 flutes, 2 Clarinets and a Tenor Sax that are still available for other students to join us. We are in the process of preparing to travel to another school this year and join another class for a day.
The visit to the senior’s cottage in our own town was cancelled because of student’s exams. The fact that it is an after school club makes it more difficult to plan a time to take students from different classes. However, I am dedicated to make every effort to attempt to go this winter.
