Helping abused and neglected animals

The Northwest Territories have built a bad reputation of animal cruelty and neglect. Animals are frequently shot or abused. The RCMP and the SPCA have often had to rescue animals left to starve outside in the cold.

Students at Sir John Franklin are aiming to change this reputation by planning and carrying out several activities in conjunction with the NWT SPCA.

Update (July 25, 2011)

This last May, the Sir John Franklin SPCA group took part in the annual trade show at the multiplex in Yellowknife. During this weekend-long event, students raised awareness on the situation of animals in the Northwest Territories. They presented the 'be a hero' campaign to visitors. With this campaign, yellowknifers can help send a dog to a better life down South by helping to cover the cost of the flight. Students also sold catgrass we grew in the greenhouse at school. We did another plant sale in June at the Yellowknife COOP. We sold fine herbs (Basil, Parsley, Dill) and tomato plants we grew in the SJF greenhouse. We recently gave $669.00 to the NWT SPCA, which is all the money we made with selling plants!

Update (January 17, 2012)

SPCA group

The SJF SPCA group has been going to Great Slave Animal Hospital to walk pound dogs once a week since the beginning of the school year. We usually go on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

We have been extremely lucky with the weather so far and every student who has come once has decided to come again. It is a very rewarding experience and the dogs are very friendly.
