Girls Getting Fit for Life

As the girls at Perspectives, every gym class and lunch hour we watch the boys play sports. We have tried to engage and play with them, but we are overwhelmed by their intensity and competitive nature. We are applying for funding in order to create health program that focus on us girls, to purchase six treadmills and to invite a nutritionist to help develop a program focused on physical activity and healthier lifestyle. Moreover, we also aim to create a video to make our male classmates aware of the importance of female health and wellbeing.
Our video will explore how good nutrition and physical health can improve our body and mind. Furthermore, we will invite a nutritionist to help us create our health program. Documenting our Perspectives 1 healthier lifestyle program will show how we support and encourage each other as we set health and stamina goals monthly and attempt to meet these goals. Finally, we will attempts to publish our video on ParticipACTION’s “Wall of Inspiration”as well as at Imagineaction.
We feel we would extremely benefit from this program. Exercise is not only good for the body but for the mind as well. We also believe that this would be a perfect opportunity to educate ourselves, our classmates and visitors of the Imagineaction and ParticipAction web site of the importance of young female health and wellbeing.

Update (January 31, 2012)

As one of the girls who was a student last year and this year at Perspectives I can see that there has been a change. Last year me and the other girls made a goal to get more healthy. We went to a local gym and took boxing lessons, got a new treadmill and fitness games for the Wii we now own.

Going to the gym last year and learning how to box was a great experience. We were five girls and one boy and it was such a change to be more girls working out. We got to be strong and tough, and it felt good to not be scared of a boy being more aggressive.

We also got a treadmill. This has been great because now, we girls take turns on the treadmill and encourage the one who is running at the time. It keeps us motivated to keep running and not get bored with the activity.

Our plan in the future is to get one more treadmill and start going and having yoga classes. It feels good to be excited about being healthy and not see gym class as something to be afraid of.
