Spreading Kindness

Part of our school development plan recognizes the need to enhance a school culture that fosters a caring learning environment. We have recognized that we need to teach/foster an environment that is based on kindness and caring for themselves and others. This project will begin at the classroom level by building positive relationships among classmates. After completing projects/activities intended to lay a strong foundation to display kindness this we will then further extend this into the school community. While working with our school LNT students will work on kindness awareness and building activities.

Update (June 26, 2018)

Students were involved in a wide variety of kindness initiatives throughout the school year. One example was our Christmas Kindness Elf. In partnership with the school board NLST teacher, students learned about kindness. One part of this project had student completing random acts of kindness. Through this initiative, students were taught how to communicate effectively and clearly, and how to respond personally and critically. Some expectations they fulfilled were: to interact with sensitivity and respect, to speak and listen, to explore, extend, clarify and reflect on their thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences, to identify factors which affect their feelings and those of others, to realize that one’s decisions may affect other people, to identify examples of positive role models, etc. Students were able to share/display their understanding in a variety of formats such as writing, kind acts and other forms of representation.
