Social Justice: Learning and Acting Together

The grade 11/12 Global Issues class along with the Sustainability and Social Justice clubs at St. James Collegiate would like to build connections with a variety of local organizations as part of their research in planning a number of Action Projects (exact themes to be determined). We currently do not have any sort of budget to help us provide small honorariums, purchase supplies for workshops, etc. We will also hold a Social Justice/Human Rights exposition in January where our projects will be presented to the student body as both an awareness and recruitment event of the various organizations.

Update (February 14, 2018)

We have been able to invite a large number of speakers into our classroom this year so far.
Joy Smith from the Joy Smith Foundation (human trafficking in Canada)
Marlo Campbell from the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (water stewardship)
Andrew Benson from the Joyful Project (global human trafficking)
Jordyn Sheldon from MARL - Manitoba Association of Rights and Liberties (Indigenous treaty rights, power and priveledge, ethical consumerism, being a social activitst)
Robert-Falcon Ouelette M.P.

We also hosted a Fair Trade market with Ten Thousand Villages, the Joyful Project, Florists Supply and MCIC.
