Girl Power Art Club

Good self-esteem leads to better overall mental health, especially in middle school. Many of our female students in middle level suffer from poor self-esteem, partly caused by low socio-economic status and lack of confidence. Many of our girls struggle to fit in.

We are planning a monthly art club to pair up middle level girls with some of our high school girls. Once a month, we will organize a safe place for our girls to get together and create art projects. Along with creating art, these girls will converse about things going on at school and at home (if students are comfortable). They will enjoy snacks and enjoy working together to create their works of art that will be put on display in the school lobby. Through this monthly club, our girls will hopefully gain confidence and build friendships with other middle school and high school girls. Middle school girls will gain self-esteem and new friends; high school girls will gain beneficial leadership skills.

Self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills all lead to better mental health.

Update (January 17, 2017)

We have been planning and are now ready to hold our first Girl Power Art Club. Our high school girls are very excited to work with some of our middle level girls, creating art and making friendships.

Update (May 30, 2017)

The high school girls enjoyed painting and talking with the middle level girls. It appears that friendships have been made.
