Reaching Out

This project is designed to inspire empathy in children and
introduce them to the importance of serving and reaching out in your community. Students will host senior citizens from a local nursing home in order to develop relationships with our often isolated senior community. The students will engage our visitors in conversation, developing their communication skills while providing company for the seniors. Students will bake for our visitors and also share their learning with their friends by sharing their writing and reading or performing some of their songs or plays. When the weather doesn’t accommodate the seniors traveling, we will Skype with them and correspond by writing letters in order to stay in communication. With funding, we will be able to visit our friends in their nursing home at least once this year.

Update (February 13, 2017)

During our visit with our new friends, the students shared the sweet treats they baked while they read their writing about their favourite holiday traditions. They discussed their traditions, read books and shared holiday jokes. The children put on a musical performance to finish off our visit and sent their guests home with a Christmas card and holiday decoration for their room. The visit was spectacular and enjoyed by all.
