Feeding the Hungry

In our Culinary Arts class, students are learning about food safety & handling, food preparation, nutrition, menu planning and serving others. The project will have two components: touring and working at the nearby soup kitchen and assisting in the packaging of monthly community food smart bags which provide fruit and vegetables to many homes in the local area.

Students will get to experience volunteering in a location where needs are high. They will assist with the preparing of food, serving, as well as clean up. Through this experience, students will see the value of local food banks and soup kitchens.

Students will complete a final group presentation that demonstrates the importance of availability of healthy foods for the needy.

Update (December 7, 2016)

Students served up a delicious turkey dinner at the local food bank. Instead of spending money on busing, we had volunteer drivers transport the students. The money was used instead to purchase pies for the dinner. The students served over 60 adults at this dinner. They did a great job! They can't get these great opportunities in a classroom. It was definitely an eye-opener for everyone. Now the students are working on preparing displays for healthy eating and feeding the hungry.

Update (January 17, 2017)

Since we ended up not needing to take a bus to visit the food bank, we decided to purchase food for the food bank. Apparently, the food bank always runs out of pasta for their families. This is a common food staple for many. Hopefully our contribution has helped.
