The Green Room/Wellness Framework

This year our school is in the process of implementing a new Wellness Framework with a focus on teaching students about self-regulation. Some of the framework components include; Zones of Regulation, The Mind Up Curriculum, classroom Calming Corners, Spark Brain Bikes, and "The Green Room". Research shows that a child's overall mental health is positively impacted by their ability to use self-regulation and resiliency skills. Children who learn to self-regulate are happier, have more friends and do better in school. One of the components of the Wellness Framework that we would like to expand on is the sensory room called "The Green Room". This room has sensory tools to help students remain in or return to a calm/alert state (Green Zone or Learning Zone). This room has been a wonderful addition to our school but is lacking sufficient resources.

Update (June 16, 2017)

The Green Room is now completed. It is equipped with many tools that individual students, small groups, and classes may access. These tools help students self-regulate and learn techniques to enhance their overall wellness. The room includes items such as yoga DVD's, spinning DVD's, meditation CD's, yoga mats, mindfulness stories, relaxing music, mandalas, stress balls, breathing exercises, bean bag chairs, a Spark Bike, soft lighting, soothing sound machine, fidgets, putty, a singing bowl, and mind jars. Thanks to the Imagineaction program we were able to finish the project and students are now enjoying having a relaxing room they can access when needed. Thanks so much to the Canadian Teacher's Federation for their support of this worthwhile project
