Sandwich Making Program

Students will act on their values of active citizenship and collective responsibility to provide for the needs of the poor in our local community. They will develop projects, such as monthly sandwich making and seasonal clothing drives, to reach out and meet the needs of others in the community.

Update (April 22, 2016)

We met in April to make sandwiches and made our second batch of 100 to bring the total to 200 sandwiches!

Update (June 3, 2016)

From a grade 10 student leader:
Recently, a representative from the Alex Centre came down to talk to us about the programs that they offer at the centres. They focus on addiction and abuse in their facilities, offering doctors, therapists, psychiatrists and support for anyone in need. They also offer homes for people on the streets and let them stay for as long as they need. This is only one of their programs, they have more services that focus on dental hygiene and medical needs as well.
Our sandwiches help them continue to focus on their clients needs, rather than if they have enough food to eat. There are many local citizens who donate things such as yogurt, bread and fruit to the Alex, but we think that having a sandwich is more filling to the clients. We make about 100 sandwiches every four weeks and they get delivered as soon as possible to ensure freshness. The people receiving the sandwiches have shown gratitude towards the sandwiches and express a great liking to them.
One negative of this program is that we are only able to make about 100 sandwiches. They get delivered on Wednesdays and are often gone by Friday or Saturday. It's still great that we are able to help out, at least for a few days a month. We are happy to provide the homeless with a good stable meal to eat during that week.

From our student leaders:
Our success, lies within the heart of our team; due to committed, passionate and inspired leaders we are able to persist and overcome our challenges. At the essence of this initiative is teamwork and collaborative action, which has inspired and motivated our peers to choose to take actions and thereby, has created success. Success for us, however, is defined not by the number of sandwiches we helped create or the number of hours we put in, instead it is the number of smiles we earned and the people we truly helped. That is our success story, that is how we thrive and that is what will continue to fuel the fire of our actions for years to come. It is so rewarding to truly make an impact in the lives of Alex residents, and to those who cannot afford to eat nutritious food daily.
