Syrian Refugee Puppet Project

Students will do research on the plight of the Syrian refugees who are coming to Cape Breton. They will design puppets for the children that will help them cope with post traumatic stress disorder. Art has tremendous possibilities to work across cultural and language barriers and help children communicate their thoughts an feelings.

Update (February 12, 2016)

Getting Started:

Students were asked to sketch a favorite childhood toy. Asking them to remember the comfort that toy provided puts them in the right frame of mind to design a toy for a child refugee/newcomer. What did the toy feel like? What colours and design elements are pleasing to a child? Describe what animal or character the toy represented.
