Connect and Engage with Seniors

The Grade 4-6 students would benefit from creating relationships with seniors in our nighborhood. We would like to have the 4/5 class and the 5/6 class visit the seniors by bus 2x each and on foot 2 more times in the spring. we would like to have the seniors share their stories and the students to share their life experiences. Students can read, and share talents in the visits.

Update (April 4, 2011)

It was apparent in our first visit to the Senior's facility that our project was a complete success. Students in groups of 6 or so, were matched with a senior (or two). What was witnessed was amazing. Students were completely engaged and shared their stories. Being listened to by others definitely created energy!
I heard student comments like "I want to find out about the Ukrainian culture", "I want to know about the Blitz and the war" and "This was the best field trip ever". The Seniors were amazed by the questions and they shared their life stories openly. A change of pace from their usual visits from kids.
We used the grant money for bus trips in the cold weather, supplies for students, and shared flip video cameras (1 per group) purchased with the help by Staples 104 Ave Manager-James Wiseman.
We hope to share video essays with the seniors and other classes in the school.
