Community Garden Bench Project (CGBP)

The CGBP is to have students design, build, and install a combination bench and raised garden space, with trellis, for the school athletic field. It is the first step to greening that yard, and establishing a community garden. The focus will be on aesthetics, community outreach, and sustainability.

Update (April 4, 2011)

Well, we have had two students submit designs for our sustainable bench project, each with some interesting designs. We have had plenty of discussion on materials (recoverable, recycled, reused, new) and the possibilities are plentiful, but we have to start somewhere.

Each proposal is getting funded, and we are looking forward to putting these proposals into reality as Spring is clearly on its way.

Update (June 28, 2011)

Well, Evan has learned a lot about engineering, problem-solving, and environmentally friendly building. His project, which is the start towards our community garden space, uses a reclaimed hydro pole, and planking made from sawdust and wheat straw. As you can imagine, these are plentiful in Manitoba, so it's nice to know he's putting them to good use.

Update (November 25, 2011)

Evan's bench is in the field now, and we are ready to move on to the next steps for establishing our sustainable community garden.
