Adopt a Grandparent

Building relationships between the generations is absolutely necessary to the survival of community history. We hope to pair students with seniors in our local community as well as seniors at the local nursing home. Students, seniors, nursing home staff and teachers will plan, organize and participate in monthly activities and celebrations.

Update (April 23, 2011)

Students are getting ready to host their adopted grandparents once again. Each time they meet, they play icebreaker games to get to know each other, other games like bingo with prizes (if a student wins a game, the prize is given to the grandparent), and of course lots of snacks. The next time they meet, they will be doing spring-themed activities. Each time the students get together with their grandparent, they are building stronger relationships. The students always look forward to getting together again.

Update (October 29, 2012)

Our middle school students have enjoyed getting to know some of the senior residents of our community and surrounding areas. Several times, the 'grandparents' came to the school and participated in games, activities, and snacks with the students. The students were very comfortable conversing with the seniors as well as assisting them in playing the games. At the end of the year, the students and 'grandparents' traveled to Fredericton for a fun day of bowling and a BBQ. Lots of friendships were made as well as students gained a better understanding and tolerance of the senior citizens in our community.
