Students Save Christmas

Students Save Christmas will raise money and seek out donations to provide holiday gifts for families who lost their homes and posessions due to Hurricane Sandy. Students will write letters and use oral communication skills to contact local businesses. They will use technology to raise awareness about the project and learn about financial planning and budgeting through the project spending plan.

Update (February 17, 2013)

So far, our project has successfully worked with local elementary schools to collect donations for our St Luke CHS "Be Kind to One Another" wristbands. With several bus cancellation disrupting our pre-Christmas fundraising, we had to revisit and refine our project. We have sent our first donation of $630 to Community Health Action of Staten Island, who will see that families in need receive the funds to help rebuild their lives.
With our missed school days, we were unable to raise awareness and donation in the community before Christmas. We will be setting up donation tables at community stores after the Lenten season is done, and will use the funds to purchase items from local stores still needed by the families we are connected with. As time goes by, many of these families are being forgotten and we are pleased that we will be able to extent our project past the Christmas Season.

Update (June 27, 2013)

We continued selling our wristbands at school and community events until the end of our school year. Our team is very proud of raising $907.52 to help families rebuild their lives after Hurricane Sandy.
Thanks Imagineaction for the great opportunity to learn more about community building and social justice in action.
