Gaining Wisdom, Building Friendships

The grade 5 and 6 class will connect and build a relationship with residents of Shepherd's Care Manor. The students will visit Shepherd's Care Manor five times before the end of June 2011. Engaging in activities such as arts and crafts, the students performing their recorders, playing board games, reading stories and having the seniors share stories with the students. The seniors will also come to our school for baking, reading buddies, and just hanging out in the classrooms.

Update (January 29, 2011)

The grade 5 and 6 students are getting ready for their social justice project to take off on Feb 4th. The students will be involved in the "Adopt a Grandparent" program at Shepherd's Care Manor. On Feb 4th the students will meet their new adoptive grandparent and spend the afternoon getting to know one another playing board games and just talking. The students have a scheduled visit in Feb, March, April and May. The adoptive grandparents will also come to our school to bake and read stories with the students. We are very excited!

Update (February 14, 2011)

We went for our first visit on Feb 4th and it was fantastic! The students met the seniors and spent the afternoon playing board games and cards. The interactions were wonderful to see and the students enjoyed learning new games such as rummy. Our next visit in March will include an art project! We can not wait!.

Update (March 10, 2011)

On March 22nd we are heading back to Shepherd's care to make crafts with our senior friends.

Update (May 30, 2011)

We have been having fun and gaining memories with our adoptive grandparents at Shepherd's care. The students have been busy making Easter eggs and Mother's Day art with their grandparent. June 14th is our last day together where the seniors are heading to our school for an afternoon of baking some yummy treats. This experience has been amazing and the students and grandparents are wholeheartedly involved. Friendships have been built and wisdom has been shared by the seniors and the students as well.

Update (June 9, 2011)

This project has been amazing, Thank-you Imagineaction for making it possible. The students and their adoptive grandparents had a wonderful time bonding and building a lasting friendship. We will continue this program for years to come at our school as it has brought our community closer.
